John Daly’s Australian Open play began to fall apart when on the 10th hole the former US PGA Champion and US Open winner hit the wrong ball during a bunker shot. The 11th hole on The Lakes course in Sydney, which is the site of the Aussie event proved to be the undoing for the famous Daly temper when he consecutively hit seven balls into the water.

Daly then took his young son who had been on the curse with him and walked off, telling his playing partners “I’m off.” Jumping on Twitter to defend his actions Daly explained “‘When u run out of balls u run out of balls. yes I shook my players partners hands & signed my card w/rules official.”

Australian golf officials were not impressed.Tournament director Trevor Herden said Daly, now 666th in the world, will never again be welcome at the Australian Open. ‘It’s very disappointing, obviously, for the tournament, certainly unprofessional and I’m extremely bitter and disappointed that he’s treated this championship this way,’ Herden said.

Herden went on to state “I would say this will be the last time we see John Daly.” Australian Golf officials are demanding both the US and European tours fine and reprimand John Daly for his unprofessional attitude and behavior.

“They need to deal with it. He’s a tour member on the US Tour and on the European Tour he also has a status, so they need to deal with this in a most serious of fashions,” Herden said.

John Daly has some serious history of bad behavior at prior Australian golf events. Two years ago at the Australian Open, he smashed a spectator’s camera Phone into a tree at Royal Sydney’s ninth hole. He accused the fan of getting up into his face with the camera.  He was given a suspended fine by Golf Australia. In another incident in 2002, after taking a triple-bogey seven on his last hole at the Coolum course, Daly threw his putter and ball into a pond next to a green and later failed to sign for a 78 on his scorecard, disqualifying himself from the tournament. He was later fined $5,000 by the Australasian tour and was ordered to write a letter of apology to a tour official he verbally abused.

What do you think about John Daly’s behavior? Doesn’t sound as if he’ll be playing ‘down-under’ on a professional basis ever again.
